7 Reasons to Visit Hocking Hills in January

Let’s face it, when most people think about January getaways, they think sunshine and beaches. But 2014 is the perfect year to broaden your horizons and explore new destinations. Save the beach for summer; here are seven great reasons to visit Hocking Hills this January.

Hocking Hills Annual Winter Hike

The Hocking Hills Annual Winter Hike is one of southeast Ohio’s biggest winter events. Join more than 5,000 fellow nature enthusiasts for a trek through some of the country’s most beautiful real estate. Hikers will be treated to stunning views of Old Man’s Cave, Ash Cave, and Cedar Falls, as well as naturalist programs, games, and of course hot bean soup. Bundle up, bring the family, and join us for this spectacular event. January 18 – Meet at Hocking Hills State Park between 9 and 11 a.m.

Local Froyo

It’s never too cold for a frozen treat! The newest addition to the Hocking Hills business community, Hocking Hills’ Frozen Yogurt Company, is now open in downtown Logan. Enjoy a delicious dessert while supporting local merchants. The grand opening and ribbon cutting celebration will be on January 16 at 4 p.m.

Art at Marietta College

As one of America’s “Revolutionary Colleges,” the history of Marietta College goes back to pre-1800. Today, this private liberal arts school in Marietta, Ohio, about an hour east of Logan, is considered one of the best colleges in the country. Opening in January are two exhibits that are worth the trip. Lost in Translation is a solo exhibition by Cleveland native Mona Gazala, whose works explore themes of industrial decay and reconstruction. Joe: A Self Portrait is a solo show by another Ohio-born artist, Joe Nanashe. Both exhibitions open January 17.

Cabin Fever Cures

You think you have cabin fever during the winter? Just think about what the pioneers had to endure—they didn’t even have wi-fi! On Saturday, January 25, at 2 p.m., visit the Naturalist Cabin at Hocking Hills State Park to learn how early settlers passed the time and survived the winter. You never know when those skills might come in handy.

Ice Fishing

When the lakes freeze over, it’s time to break out the fishing poles. Many areas of Hocking Hills State Park, including Old Man’s Cave, Lake Logan, and Lake Hope, have ice fishing facilities.

Spiritual Guidance

Want to know if romance or riches are in your future? The most talented psychics and other spiritual guides in the area will be on hand to answer these and other burning questions at the free Psychic Fair on January 26 at the Inn at Cedar Falls.
