When you were growing up, did you get to stay up late to watch It’s a Wonderful Life and A Christmas Story? Or maybe your family always took in the local community production of A Christmas Carol or the “Singing Christmas Tree.” Many of our best-loved holiday traditions revolve around these classic movies and shows that, no matter how often we see them, we still look forward to every year. Hocking Hills always has plenty of entertainment to help you get into the holiday spirit.
Here are four fun shows happening in Hocking Hills this December.
A Taste of Dickens at Glenlaurel Inn
What would Christmas be without a little Dickens? The annual Glenlaurel Dickens Dinner is sure to delight foodies and theater lovers alike. The six-course feast takes place every Wednesday and Sunday in December through the 23rd and features readings of A Christmas Carol between courses. The price is $49 per person, and reservations are highly recommended.
The Best Christmas Pageant Ever
Looking for some family-friendly fun? The “worst kids in the world” are at it again in ABC Players’ The Best Christmas Pageant Ever. Adapted from Barbara Robinson’s 1971 classic young adult novel, this short comedy production is appropriate for all audiences. The show runs the first weekend of December (5-7) with evening shows on Friday and Saturday and a matinee on Sunday.
Tudor Christmas at Ravenwood Castle
Even though it was the tail end of the Middle Ages, the Tudors really knew how to party! Ravenwood Castle is Hocking Hills’s top spot for themed entertainment, and the Tudor Christmas celebration on Saturday, December 14, promises an evening of old English-style mayhem. King Henry VIII and his royal court (which last year included a fire dancer) will be in attendance. The price is $50 per person and all of the fun starts at 6:00. Get your tickets early—this event will sell out!
An Appalachian Christmas Carol
Everyone loves a new twist on an old favorite. Local theater company Brick Monkey’s An Appalachian Christmas Carol is back for its second year. This update on Dickens’s masterpiece is set in 1907 in southeast Ohio and features Scrooge as the owner of a local coal mine. The show plays for two weekends, December 13 through 15 and 19 through 22, at Stuart’s Opera House in Nelsonville.
After enjoying one of these fine events, what better way to top off the evening than by spending a night in a snow-covered cabin in the woods?
